What’s Your Take On Valentine’s Day? + Some Fun Date Ideas For Every Type Of Person

What's Your Take On Valentine's Day? | A Girl & Grey | @agirlandgrey

There are three types of people in this world: those who celebrate Valentine’s Day, those who don’t, and those who vehemently detest the occasion.

I situate myself firmly in the first camp these days {and have for the past eight years, to be fair}, but I used to sit somewhere between the latter two when I was a single girl.

I think it’s a natural progression — you love it and then you hate it — and this progression probably follows the same pattern as your relationship status. I’m yet to meet someone in a relationship that absolutely hates the occasion, and I’m yet to meet someone not in a relationship that absolutely adores the occasion.

Last year I wrote a piece on Valentine’s Day that I’m still particularly proud of, however this year I’ve sort of changed my tune.

I still believe that everyone should be a little less… cynical{?} of ~tHe DaY oF lOvE~ and those who bend over backwards to celebrate it, but I’m also at the point now where I’m so down for everyone to just feel the way they want to feel, yano? If you hate Valentine’s Day, that’s totally fine babe and I get it. If you love Valentine’s Day, that’s totally fine babe and I get it. If you’re somewhat nonchalant to the whole occasion, that’s also totally fine babe and I completely get it.

As easy as it is to sit here, as someone in a relationship, and tell you that it’s important for you to be supportive of those in love and blah blah blah, that doesn’t change the fact that maybe this time of year can feel kind of sucky for you if you’re not wrapped up in a pink-tinted love bubble. Trust me — I’ve totally been there.

Feel how you need to feel, but don’t dwell on your relationship status for any longer than you need to, please. You’re worth so much more than that.

Now, here are some fun date ideas for everybody — whether you’re spending the 14th of February at work, with your boo, or with your cats.

  • Buy yourself a fancy bottle of wine and box of chocolates and spend the evening binge watching the Ted Bundy documentary on Netflix. This is the perfect idea if you’re single, or if you’re in a serious, long-term relationship, but I wouldn’t recommend doing it if your relationship is relatively new. Your serial killer fascination *might* scare them off…
  • Take yourself to the cinema {I’d recommend catching Escape Room while it’s still in theatres — so good} and sit at the very back. Perfect if you’re single because you’ve got an empty seat EITHER SIDE which means you can sit your bag, phone and keys on one side and your snacks on the other. LIVING, am I right?
  • Making a really nice dinner at home and watching a good film is what we’ll be doing this Valentine’s Day — complete with some vanilla bean ice-cream and maybe some chocolate brownies? We’re both pretty busy, like all of the time, and so taking a Wednesday night off to just hang out and chill is something that will feel extra special for us both. Also — staying at home means I get to wear pjs and no makeup, which is a maj. plus for me.
  • Head to the ‘nice’ bar in your area — you know, the one with the ridiculously overpriced cocktails and kind of rude bartenders? Spend a few hours there with your girlfriends drinking fruity drinks and maybe pick up a kebab on the way home. The perfect night out, if you ask me.

How will you be spending Valentine’s Day?

I don’t hate Valentine’s Day but I can understand why people might not like it. I’ve always thought it’s cute that couple try and make an effort for the day and the fact that you don’t have to go all out but want to celebrate your love for each other alongside everyone else who wants to do the same. This will be my first Valentine’s day single in three years and I’ll be going to work and chilling when I get home haha x
