Is it obvious that I’m having a major Parisian moment right now? I think that, as women age, we become more and more fascinated with French culture. But why is that?
For me, I think it’s about elegance: I love the Parisian approach to food, wellness and fashion, and I also find the French woman’s approach to ageing to be particular refreshing. It’s all about embracing oneself with grace as opposed to trying to change oneself with injections and procedures. There’s also the belief that we deserve the best, and only the best, and that taking the time to care for our skin and body is not selfish or ‘a bit of a luxury’. It’s simply ritualistic and something we should actively participate in every day. Founder of the French skincare brand Caudalie said “it is about choosing only the best and understanding that you are entitled to have a beauty regime that makes you look and feel beautiful at the same time,” and I can 100% get on board with that perspective.
I also love the stillness of the Parisian culture. Instead of running up mountains and constantly rushing about, I’ve noticed that French women love to exist in silence and stillness. Whether that’s over a solo brunch date with a book in hand, or simply musing over the art in a gallery, they always seem to be in complete peace, even when the world around them is in absolute disarray. There’s just a certain… je ne sais quoi about French women that I aspire to have. Maybe it’s their togetherness, their style, their perspective and priorities – or maybe a mixture of all of those things – that I find incredibly inspiring.
If you’re after some Parisian inspiration, this article kind of sums up all of the ways I’m having a French moment this month. I’m taking my coffee black, prioritising simple skincare and buying my groceries locally. I’m also approaching May with a less is more mindset, which means I’m incorporating fewer products in my skincare and makeup routine, buying fewer material items for my home and closet, and putting fewer ingredients in my meals. I want to focus on enjoying the moments I am currently in, and not just plan for the moments that are approaching.
While writing this, I was doing a little more research on the French lifestyle and came across a quote I just had to share. You can find the entire article here, which was an absolute pleasure to read, I can assure you.
Perhaps the French woman understands that we know ourselves better than we think and that, possibly, the world has been waiting with its hands cupped for us to ask of it to be kind. Maybe the romance of the elusive French woman stems from the idea that when we give in to the voice inside of us that demands beauty, it just might be what we get.Judy Kim for Refinery29
