Letter From The Editor: February

Aaaah, February. The month of love, the end of a season, and the ideal time to break your New Years resolutions while still being able to say that you ‘gave it a good try’.

While last month felt as though it went on forever, there’s something about the month of Feb that seems so… fleeting? Maybe it can be blamed on the the fewer days within the month itself, or maybe it’s down to something a little more ambiguous.

For me, February always seems to be one of positivity and prosperity. We’re beyond the worry of January — with an entire year looming ahead and so many unknowns — while at the same time approaching a seasonal transition and diving back into work at a more serious pace.

I think the reason February always seems to fly by for me is because it’s possibly the month where I spend the most time looking ahead. I do quite a lot of that in January — don’t get me wrong; but I think because I’m well over the sticky warmth that summer brings to the coast, I’m more preoccupied with counting down the days until it’s *officially* autumn.

Obviously, February is also the month of Valentine’s Day, and as such becomes symbolic of relationships — whether romantic or not.

Last year I wrote a fun little piece about some of my thoughts on the celebration of Valentine’s Day, and while I can’t really say that my opinion has changed all that much, I do think my approach to the day has somewhat differed to last year.

I’m calling it now — Valentine’s Day 2019 is all about falling more in love with YOURSELF! My favourite quote at the moment is by Sophia Bush, who is a total icon {that you need to be following on Twitter btw}, and I think it perfectly embodies the whole ~vibe~ I want for February.

you are allowed to be both a masterpiece and a work in progress simultaneously.

Sophia Bush

Aside from the fact that I still can’t pronounce the word ‘simultaneously’ {is it sigh-multaneously or sim-ultaneously?}, I’m going to be repeating this quote to myself whenever I feel less than enough.

In the age of instagram, it’s so very easy to feel less than enough. We don’t look like the girls we see, we don’t have the same clothes and our teeth aren’t as white. Maybe it’s not necessarily a visual thing either. Maybe your comparison isn’t about looks, but more about success. You don’t feel as accomplished as those you see online, you don’t seem as happy as those you see online, etc, etc, etc.

Something to remember about instagram is that things are never as they appear to be. Nobody looks like they do on instagram, and nobody is as happy/successful/positive as they appear to be online. Everyone is a work in progress, and nobody is flawless. We all have our little quirks, but that’s what makes us who we are — we are our own masterpieces. Every experience you have had up until this point has made you into the person you are today, and you are stronger because of it. You are a work in progress — yes, but you are also a masterpiece.

Relating this concept back to the month of ~lurve~ {or February, as most people call it}, I challenge you to spend a little more time loving yourself this month. Just because you aren’t ‘perfect’ {the concept of which is subjective, btw} doesn’t mean that you don’t deserve it. And no, I’m not talking about affirmations or anything else like that, I mean more so in a generalised sense. Find out the things you love to do, and do more of them! Buy yourself nice things, because you want them, not because you need them. Treat yourself the way you would expect a significant other to, even if you are in a relationship! I think setting those boundaries and expectations of love for yourself is a healthy way to learn and exhibit the ways in which you expect to be loved by those around you. If you don’t truly understand the ways in which you need to be loved, how can you expect anyone else to?

Love this idea girl! So important to love yourself! Dave and I have decided we aren’t going to do Valentine’s Day this year, because it doesn’t really mean anything to us. So I might try and do a little something for myself on Valentine’s Day instead!
