Guys… I know it’s so millennial of me, but today I’m going to be chatting all things avocado toast.
Here’s the thing: I’ve always liked avocado.
On nachos, in salads, blended into a smoothie – you name it, I’ve done it.
But when avocado toast became ~ a thing ~ I got kinda confused. I’ve been smashing the humble ol’ avo on my toast for years… surely everyone else has been doing this too?!
It’s been said that us millennials can’t afford houses because we spend our weekends ordering avocado toast at our local cafés, and while I can’t exactly agree with that statement in particular, I will say that there is a ridiculous markup on what is essentially mushed fruit on bread.
I guess the real question is: why do we insist on spending more than we need to?
Today’s post is for those of you who refuse to pay more than your weekly phone bill for a Saturday morning breakfast, and it’s also for those of you who don’t know how to dress up the humble ol’ avocado. I’ll admit – it’s a little tricky at first – but after reading this post you’re sure to have a few staple combos up your sleeve.
So invite your gal pals around for a Saturday morning brunch at a third of the price, and instead spend those pennies on the things you really want and need. Like avocado eye cream, obviously.
5 WAYS TO JAZZ UP YOUR AVOCADO TOAST
Firstly, let’s talk bread.
Because I am A-OK with any kind of bread. I’m not fussy when it comes to my processed carbs.
But… I will say that everything tastes better on sourdough. There, I said it.
I made the avocado toast in these pictures on plain old supermarket bread and it tasted wonderful, so I guess that’s up to you.
COMBO NUMBER ONE: Chilli Jam & Basil Pesto
Spicy yet sweet at the same time, this combo is perfect if you’re in a rush and are looking for something a bit more than just plain avo. I’m also low key obsessed with chilli jam right now so I definitely advise drowning your toast in it.
COMBO NUMBER TWO: Peach & Feta
This combo is super summery and also a reaaal breakfast treat. I like using yellow peaches as I find them to be a bit juicier, and I recommend going with a danish feta – it’s creamier and saltier than any other varieties.
COMBO NUMBER THREE: Tomato, Feta & Sprouts
I feel like tomato and avocado were made for each other. Also, feta because it’s the perfect way to add saltiness without adding salt [ya feel?] and sprouts because they’re a crunchy, gut-healthy garnish.
COMBO NUMBER FOUR: Pomegranate & Poppyseed
Packed with anti-oxidants and lots of juicy crunch, this combo might just be my favourite. I buy my pomegranate arils frozen from Woolworths which means they’re always good to go [& they somehow taste better frozen?]
COMBO NUMBER FIVE: Lemon, Chilli & Sesame
a.k.a. the basic b*tch of avocado toast toppings. I use an entire lemon per slice of toast and also a tonne of chilli flakes. I like it spicy [& a little salty – sea salt is best]. Use a combo of black and white sesame seeds if you can for ultimate anti-aging benefits!

If all of your pals are basic [like me] you could always make up a huge platter with a bit of each on it. I’m thinking a marble tray like this one with a huge bowl of raspberries in the center and a rando assortment of the avocado toast combinations above… and mimosas. You’ve gotta have mimosas.
