As much as I hate to admit it, I’m still dealing with breakouts at 25.
I indulged in the fantasy that most teenagers have – the one where being an adult automatically meant no more breakouts – but sadly that hasn’t been the case, at least for me.
I think I can get maybe one week out of a month where I don’t have a single blemish on my face? But the other three are plagued with hormonal acne and random spots on my forehead and cheeks.
Because of this, I’ve built up what I would like to call an arsenal against acne.
Seriously – I’ve tried it all – from pimple cream to acne toners and mattifying mists, and today I’m going to share them on the blog with you all. I guess you could call me an expert in the area of ‘skincare for when my skin is breaking out’. Lol what an achievement.
First things first, let’s chat masks.
I have two masks that I switch between whenever my skin is breaking out, and that’s because they both serve very different purposes. To calm spots overnight and purify my skin, I turn to The Body Shop’s Tea Tree Anti-Imperfection Night Mask. It’s a brilliant product because you can apply and wear it overnight, while you sleep, and wake up with fresher, less angry skin. I also use it on the odd occasion as a quick spot treatment before applying makeup as it’s not too harsh and thus doesn’t dehydrate the skin around the blemish.
The second mask I use is Lush’s Mask of Magnaminty. I’ve written about this cult classic mask before on my blog, but it really is one of my go-to skincare products for breakouts. It’s infused with peppermint oil, honey and kaolin clay, which help cleanse and draw impurities out of the skin. It’s also very refreshing and kind of tingly, so after you remove it your skin feels so clean and calm. I love applying this right after a hot shower, when my pores are open, and allowing it to sit and dry on my skin for half an hour to an hour. Somehow my spots are way less angry after I use this mask and manage to clear up within a matter of days. It’s a miracle product, I’m telling ya.
Now, let’s get onto serums.
Again, there are two serums that I use when my skin is breaking out. One is more of a vitamin serum, and the other is more of an oil. The vitamin serum I use is The Ordinary’s Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1%. Obviously it works well to nourish the skin and provide the right minerals and vitamins to help the skin regeneration process, but it’s also really effective in clearing out the bad stuff in your pores.
The oil I use is my one true love, and that’s Sunday Riley’s Luna Sleeping Night Oil. It’s another cult classic skincare item, and I honestly don’t think I could ever live without it. It contains avocado, chia and grapeseed oils, so it nourishes your skin while at the same time reversing any damage and clearing up spots. If you apply this the right way onto blemished skin, I guarantee you’re going to wake up with a noticeably smoother and clearer complexion.
And last, but not least, are a toner and spot treatment that are brilliant for banishing breakouts.
The toner I use is the Sunday Riley Martian Mattifying Melting Toner. It’s an incredible gel formula that melts away to water as you massage it into the skin. The smell isn’t great – I’ll tell you that – as with most Sunday Riley products, but it’s really such an effective product for oily/acne prone skin. Bentonite clay, green tea, marshmallow root, cucumber and witch hazel are just a few of the ingredients that make up this incredible toner.
Now, if we’re talking cult-status products, obviously I’ve got to talk about the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion. I feel like everyone and their mother raves about this stuff but that’s because it works. I’m only on my second bottle of this but I’ve been using it for well over a year now as a spot treatment for super angry blemishes. I really recommend buying this, especially if you tend to pick at your skin if you’re feeling stressed. This spot treatment will dry up and heal those nasty infections in next to no time, and the calamine layer actually stops me from repeat picking or absentmindedly touching breakouts. I’m such a stress picker, and so this product is like a god-send for my skin.
