3 Ways With Bluebird Tea Co’s Black Magic Matcha

Two words: matcha and charcoal. You in?

The Bluebird Tea Company have recently released a few new blends to add to their already expansive matcha range and I just had to write about one of my favourites here on the blog – the Black Magic Matcha

It’s a charcoal based blend containing activated coconut charcoal, cocoa powder, matcha green tea and Kenyan white matcha.

I first read about charcoals health benefits here and ever since then have been incorporating it into my wellness routine here and there {basically whenever I feel I need it}.

Charcoal is fab for detoxifying the body. In fact, medical practitioners have used charcoal to treat drug overdoses and poisonings for years, and that’s because of its ability to rid the body of unwanted chemicals and substances.

In the modern health and wellness sphere, it’s mainly used now to detoxify the body after a night out {a.k.a. relieve your bitch of a hangover}, cleanse the skin {cya blackheads!}, and help relieve bloating symptoms {this one is legit}.

Paired alongside the already amazing matcha {post on everything matcha coming soon} it’s basically a miracle in a mug.

If you’ve been here for a while you will know by now that I love getting crafty when it comes to tea. From guac to cheesecake and even skincare, I really believe there is so much more to tea than just drinking it.

The Bluebird Tea Company was lovely enough to send me a tin of their Black Magic Matcha to play around with, and they also gave me a discount code for all of my readers. GGTEABIRD56 will get you 20% off your first order of tea – and that includes matcha! Some of their other flavours include Salted Caramel, Gingernut, Ice Cream and Beetberry. Major – right? So head on over to the Bluebird website to order yourself a tin of matcha on the cheap and keep on reading this post to find out three fun ways to use it.

I am that person who insists on salting their food. I know, I know, traditionally we’re told to avoid salt like the plague, but actually {when consumed in moderation} sea salt or pink Himalayan salt are helpful in providing the body with trace minerals and electrolytes. By combining sea salt with Black Magic Matcha, you’re getting a double dose of nutrients paired with natural detoxification and an energy boost. Win/win!

Making this black salt is super simple. It’s basically a 1:1 ratio of Black Magic Matcha and Maldon Sea Salt Flakes. To start off with I just used one teaspoon of each in a small jar, shook it well, and then added it to food. It’s especially fab on roasted potatoes, fried eggs and haloumi. Just take a pinch of it and sprinkle it over your meal, as you would regular salt.

I mean… are we even surprised that I made a mask out of this stuff? I’m pretty much psycho when it comes to skincare and I just couldn’t help myself – I got way too excited when thinking about the combination of matcha and charcoal and the benefits the two would provide my skin… So let’s just roll with it.

Another simple recipe to prepare: just combine one teaspoon of Black Magic Matcha with one teaspoon each of manuka honey, dried lavender, dried rose petals and bentonite clay powder, as well as three teaspoons of rosewater. Mix well, and then apply all over your face {I suggest doing this over a sink as it can be a little messy}. Lay back and let the mask sit on your skin for twenty minutes or so before removing with a warm wet washcloth.

The rose, manuka honey and lavender are incredibly nourishing for the skin, while the matcha, charcoal and bentonite clay are all super cleansing and detoxifying. I guarantee your skin will look, feel and smell incredible afterwards. Mine sure did!

Those of you that follow me on instagram will know that lately I’ve been drinking iced matcha like it’s going out of fashion {I wish I was over-exaggerating – it’s become a slight addiction}. I was a bit worried about swapping out my normal green drink for something that looks kinda scary but actually, charcoal is flavourless so you just get the beautiful matcha flavour combined with chocolatey cocoa powder. Amazing, right?

It’s super easy too. Just add one to two teaspoons of Black Magic Matcha into a pint sized jar {these are my fav} along with 1.5 cups of almond milk, 1 teaspoon of maple syrup and a handful of ice. Pop the lid on tightly and shake vigorously {think of it as an arm workout} for about a minute. Take the lid off, pop a straw in {shop my fave stainless steel straws here} and enjoy.

This iced latte is my favourite way to start the day as of late, but please be aware that due to charcoals absorption powers, it does render any medication you take within three hours of consumption useless {a.k.a. take your birth control and blood pressure pills at least three hours before or after drinking this latte!}. I will also mention that charcoal is super detoxifying – super detoxifying – and also very black {obviously} so just be aware of that when nature calls… You’re not dying – it’s just charcoal. I’ve been drinking this two to three times a week and have experienced a flatter stomach and less bloating issues, so I guess it works!
