Banana Bread Iced Chai featuring Bluebird Tea Co

Banana Bread Iced Chai featuring Bluebird Tea Co

There’s nothing quite as life-affirming as my first cup of tea in the morning. It’s something that I crave from the moment I wake up, and it most definitely sets the tone of my day.

I tend to go for a black tea blend as I’m a proper addict, and while I do prefer it strong and dark (the tea, guys, come on now) I’m not opposed to a little honey if the cuppa needs it.

The only issue I have ever encountered as a result of my morning-three-cups-of-tea-habit is summer. You know, that thing we Australians suffer with for way too many months a year? Yeah, that. Nothing is as uncomfortable as drinking a hot cup of Earl Grey Creme tea with sweat running down your back and crack. Some would call it a minor inconvenience. To me it’s a deal-breaker.

So to tackle this issue (which is a major problem for all of us, I’m sure) I decided to turn my favourite brew into an ICED LATTE… sorta. It’s coffee free, because those of us with fried nerves can’t handle that shit, but it’s just as good, if not better than its hot counterpart. It tastes buttery and sweet and creamy and oh my god I’m obsessed. It’s also stupidly easy to make, vegan-dairy-free-gluten-free-etc-etc, kinda great for your health, and did I mention that it’s made with Bluebird Tea Co?

You guys know I’m obsessed with Bluebird, and I want you to be as well. They’re just the nicest, friendliest and most generous company I’ve ever worked with, and their tea selection is second to none. Did you know they stock the largest matcha range in the UK? Incredible, right? Some of my favourite blends are the Ice Cream Matcha, Salted Caramel Matcha and Turmeric Matcha, and I’m also kind of addicted to the Spiced Pumpkin Pie loose leaf tea, which is selling like CRAZY for Halloween – don’t miss out! Use my code GGTEABIRD56 for a little surprise at checkout.

Anyway, back to the recipe. Are you ready to see how I make my BANANA BREAD ICED CHAI?

serves just you babe!

YOU’LL NEED:

2 tsp Banana Bread Chai

1 cup unsweetened almond milk

1 tsp maple syrup

1-2 tsp ground cinnamon, depending on how intense you like it

other rando bits: a teapot, an ice cube tray, a jar, and a straw if you fancy

HOW TO DO IT:

First, boil the kettle. Pop two teaspoons of Banana Bread Chai into your teapot, pour over the boiling water, and allow to steep for five minutes max. Any longer and you’ll burn the shit out of it. Allow the brewed tea to cool for about ten minutes.

Pour into the ice cube tray, pop into the freezer, and wait until frozen. I left mine overnight, but it’s totally dependent on your freezer (mine sucks, obviously).

Once your ice cubes are frozen, put them into a jar. I recommend using ALL of them if you’re like me and LOVE a strong brew, but maybe use half if you’re not that keen. I used a pint sized Mason Ball Jar because of the lid, but whatever is fine. Pour in your almond milk, add the cinnamon and maple syrup, and then chuck the lid on the jar. Make sure it’s tightly sealed, because you’re going to shake the jar for about sixty seconds until the cinnamon is completely mixed through. Take the lid off, pop a straw in and sip throughout your morning!

I like to leave mine sitting on the kitchen bench for about half an hour after I shake it up, so the ice cubes melt a little, but I’ve also been known to drink it all straight away and then add MORE almond milk in. Two in one, or something like that.

Don’t forget to buy yourself some Banana Bread Chai to take your iced latte to the next level. It’s beyond heavenly and somehow tastes like the real thing. I don’t know how Bluebird Tea Co does it, but they do.
